The Romero Lives Film Series Presents: A Celebration of Pittsburgh’s Horror Master, George A. Romero
A criminally underrated gem in Romero’s filmography, Monkey Shines follows an athlete named Allan after a devastating accident leaves him quadriplegic. In an attempt to help his friend, a scientist offers him Ella, a helper monkey from his lab. But the experiments on Ella have left her with hidden gifts that soon turn dangerous. Extraordinarily intelligent and preternaturally sensitive to Allan’s needs and moods, Ella grows violent towards Allan’s enemies, and viciously jealous of his friends. After decades of fierce independence, Monkey Shines was Romero’s first foray into Hollywood – though he still brought the production to Pittsburgh. A remarkably inventive film that, like so much of Romero’s best work, pushes its premise into the realm of the surreal.
